Church | Gold

For a band whose name conjures such loaded imagery, Church employ a surprising less is more philosophy to their brand of atmospheric chamber pop. Brothers Brandon and Richard Laws and Cristof Hendrickson have been making music under their reverent pseudonym since Nov 2007, although the relationships in Church were forged long before the conception of their band. Brandon and Cristof were friends from their college days at UC Santa Barbara, where the two shared a joint love of the band Kraftwerk, which was expressed in their former synth-pop incarnation With The Strength of 1000 Monsters. Upon graduation, the two moved to Portland and joined with the other Laws brother, Richard, and moved into a house. Revisiting a childhood obsession with the Beach Boys, the brothers, along with Hendrickson's vintage synth collection, began to create hauntingly beautiful avant pop under the name Church, meant to reflect the spacial intensity and reflection evident in each song.

Since their formation, Church has already gathered a solid following in their hometown of Portland Oregon. In their short time in existence, the band has already played at every major venue in Portland, and been featured in both major weekly newspapers and other local publications. Quite a feat, given that almost all performances and features have been at the request of venues and writers without any solicitation or publicity from the band, and understandingly so. Church's live act is a unique balancing act, as each member is taking on at least two simultaneous rolls in their energizing and emotive show.

Their second release, Gold, is a perfect example of Church's ability to span a large, emotional scope within strict confines. Recorded without over-dubbing, and clocking just under 16 minutes, Gold creates a moving sonic landscape without ever becoming trite or redundant. The limited release will be available on the SoHiTek webpage in early October 2008
